Based on the book published by V. (formerly Eve Ensler) in 2010, the play explores what it means to be a girl in today’s world. Through a series of monologues, stories, and many songs, the performance sheds light on the joys, challenges, and violence that girls face everywhere. The production spans very different cultures and continents, highlighting both the diversity and the shared nature of the issues girls confront — both personal and political — and very often connected to their own bodies.
Ensler said: “I Am an Emotional Creature is about changing the verb to please into to create, to challenge, to resist, or to imagine. It is about traveling and dancing and refusing. It is about telling secrets and breaking taboos. It is about being free.”
This is an empowering performance for women and teenage girls, but it is also a wake-up call for men and adolescent boys, helping them better understand and respect the “other.”
